Philharmonia Orchestra

Thursday, 7 February, 7.30pm
  • Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor
  • Pierre-Laurent Aimard piano
  • Cynthia Millar ondes martenot
  • Messiaen Turangalîla-symphonie

Messiaen’s vast Turangalîla-symphonie requires an orchestra of colossal dimensions and a large array of tuned percussion. The work’s eclectic mix of influences embraces Wagnerian themes of transcendent love, the bell-like sonorities of Javanese gamelan, Hindu rhythms, Impressionist harmonies, birdsong and jazzy Gershwin-like elements. One of the work’s distinctive features is the use of the ondes martenot, an electronic instrument providing unique glissando effects.
