At the same time as Messiaen was stretching organ composition to new untested limits, his colleague Maurice Durufl é was perfecting his distinctive compositional voice with liberated and inspired modal harmony. Duruflé ‘s three-movement Suite, with its dramatic and virtuosic Toccata, is paired with Messiaen’s seven-movement Suite, with its central dramatic combat of life and death.
